Super Mother Entrepreneur – Silviya Velkova from Silistra, Bulgaria

Today in our “Super mother entrepreneur” series, we introduce our partner Silvia Velkova from Silistra, Bulgaria.

Silvia is the owner of the first SmartyKids centre in Silistra, which has been operating successfully for over a year now. In this article, she will tell us more about how she decided to open her SmartyKids centre and how she successfully combined her business responsibilities with raising her child.

Please, tell us more about yourself. At what stage in your life were you when you decided to start your own business?

I lived abroad for many years. However, I knew I was not in the right place. I knew that somewhere I could be more useful and be myself. Returning to Bulgaria, in a small town like Silistra, many of my friends and relatives thought I would have no prospects for professional development here. They thought we were going to live abroad again, that’s why I’ve started to research what I could do for a living if I decide to stay in Bulgaria.

I knew what mental arithmetic is and also the advantages for a child’s development. I wanted to enroll my son in lessons when he was only four years old. That’s how I discovered that there isn’t a centre that offers such courses for children in Silistra. That is how, piece by piece, the puzzle fell into place, and I became part of the big SmartyKids family.

Why did you choose the SmartyKids brand for your own business?

The more I studied and got to know the methodology, the more I understood the capabilities and ideology of SmartyKids. All this gave me confidence that I had made the right decision. When I opened the centre, I started with one course. A year later, we already offer as many as 3. Every day the business becomes more successful.

What expectations did you have before starting the business?

I can honestly say that my expectations were surpassed. I’m not just talking about the material part. Knowing and seeing that you are helping children grow their potential is priceless. Parents observe the progress of their children’s education in a short period. For us, teachers, their gratitude is more than enough.

Are you able to successfully combine business and raising a child?

At first, it was difficult to combine my professional arrangements with raising my son. A few months after I launched the centre, I had even more children signed up for our classes and I had to hire two teachers to help me. I was lucky to meet these wonderful girls, to whom I am infinitely grateful. They do their work with love and care. Their help allows me to make my program more flexible and be able to spend more time with my son.

How long (from contract signing) did it take for the business to begin generating revenue?

Maybe 2-3 months after signing the contract.

What would it be if you had to describe your SmartyKids business in one sentence?

A man is only as big as his dreams. ❤️

What advice would you give to people who are hesitant to take the first step in developing their own business?

Be brave and follow your inner voice!
